Radix Pavilion

The steel pavilion consists of three interconnected domes. The design by Portuguese architects Aires Mateus is inspired by the nearby shipyards by Jacopo Sansovino from the period 1568-73. The main aim of the temporary installation was to relate to the characteristic colonnade in the Venetian Arsenal.
We present "Radix" the work done by the brothers and Portuguese architects Manuel and Francisco Aires Mateus as a contribution to the Venice Biennale 2012. It consists of a steel installation located on the docks of Arsenal, integrating the new with the old.
Outside of the Arsenale find "Radix" the installation designed by the Portuguese Francisco and Manuel Aires Mateus. It consists of a steel structure that sits on piers which were designed by Jacopo Sansovino between 1568 and 1573. The installation intends to create a continuity with arcaded Arsenal galleries.
"Radix" is an arch supported on three points and a fourth end suspended over the water, creating a sense of balance to a heavy structure.
"Conceptually, this structure combines history with the contemporary and the technology. Radix is a structure that suggests continuity over novelty.  Suggests that to investigate and to propose in combination are acts that allow for dialogue and reflections found. In the area of architecture, the memory identifies forms, space materials, touch, light and sound...This process of identification gives a step to critical thinking that allows us to understand a common heritage. Rather than a particular concept or recreate a special moment, the architects evoke a sense of identity through the use of form and spaces that constitute the value of the collective."
