The site is on the edge of new construction that replaced the original gardening colony in northern Brno. The original subdivision of narrow gardens was transformed into a similarly small orthogonal grid for new houses, which mostly occupy the entire plot except for the legally mandated 3.5-meter strips from the neighbor's boundary.
The brief from the investor was simple: "different, but discreet."
The orientation of the building was influenced by the atmosphere of the forest, which was to extend into the future interior spaces as much as possible. However, the forest is to the north and the street to the south.
The concept became about bringing light into the living space consistently throughout the day. In the rough form of the letter "V," the main layout is arranged on the upper floor, opening up toward the adjacent forest. The decision to place the main living area on the upper floor of the building and the bedrooms on the ground floor was a significant moment for the design itself. An outdoor terrace is positioned in the wedge between the spaces, hidden from the neighbor's view and, due to its location on the upper floor, provides a direct view into the forest. At the same time, it acts as a roof for the bedrooms on the ground floor, shielding them from the rain. The quiet area on the ground floor connects to a garden oriented to the northeast, thus receiving sunlight only in the morning. However, on the upper floor, the windows are positioned on the sides of the irregular floor plan, cleverly bringing light into the core of the layout. The living area is also illuminated by a raised window on the gallery from the south. Thus, throughout the day, the main space transforms with the light.
The two-story mass in the shape of a softly rounded triangle is calmed towards the street by a simple single-story rectangular volume intended for the entrance spaces, garage, and workshop. The house thus blends into the context of the neighboring development and responds to the fragile and changing existence of the forest towards the garden.
