Private housing for a couple in middle age. A couple with adult children with their own homes and lives, a couple with a wide range of interests, a couple living a social life. An extensive library, an art collection, separate workspaces. In the future, the possibility of separate accommodation for grandparents, which can also be used in the meantime for housing children, grandchildren, or guests. The connection of living spaces to the garden.
On the site of the new building, there was a two-story family house that connected its western side to the neighbor, forming an identical pair with it. Over time, both houses underwent many modifications and renovations, which largely weakened the original design. These were buildings typical of the time of their creation, when living rooms were oriented to the street (north) and service and communication spaces faced the garden (south). The site also housed a garage building and an outdoor pool.
Based on the program requirements, we divided the building into two masses that utilize different elevations of the street relative to the garden (more than 2m). The multi-story mass of the house, which mimics the shape and height of the original object with its cornice, and the horizontal mass of the extension adjacent to the neighboring garage building. The multi-story part contains the couple's living space along with all necessary service facilities. The single-story extension houses the entries, parking spaces, and a "granny flat" under one roof. The composition of functions and spaces in both masses unfolds absolutely logically. Both vertically and horizontally into the depth of the layout. The house is designed as one continuous open space with varying heights, with different degrees of enclosure and intimacy for individual functions. Only service spaces and the bedroom area are completely separated. From the street level, we enter through the vestibule and the entrance hall with a staircase. The hall is connected to the living floor, which opens to the garden through a terrace with a pergola. From the entrance hall, necessary service facilities are accessible. The multi-story living floor is the heart of the house, horizontally followed by the dining room with the kitchen, and vertically bordered by a gallery with a library, from which access to a separate bedroom area with a dressing room is available. Above the block of the bedroom area and the library gallery under the roof are two workspaces along with a small nook for sleeping. The roof mass includes "notches" for illumination on all sides, and conversely, the volume of the bathroom expands from its mass. The horizontal extension is a relatively utilitarian building. Facing the street are two covered parking spaces, behind which is a standalone living part of a studio apartment connected to the garden. Both living parts can be interconnected inside at the level of the entrance hall.
