The project addresses the reconstruction of a mountain lodge from the late 1970s. It is located at Na Rozcestí (1,345 m.a.s.l.) in the Krkonoš mountains, on the ridge between Špindlerův Mlýn and Pec pod Sněžkou. From this location, the ridges of the Central Krkonoš mountains, including the highest peak Sněžka, are visible.
We think of our house as a contemporary building that also allows the original structures to stand out. We perceive it more as a new object inserted into this location than as a building that has grown here over time. We view it as a compact aerodynamic shape placed in an environment with extraordinary natural and climatic conditions. We regard it more than just a classic building, as a structure from the world of hovercraft, airplanes, or submarines, while also being a construction that emerges from the surrounding nature, climate, and relief.
We complement the original mass of the building into a symmetrical shape with a rectangular floor plan. The existing triangular cross-section of the house is elevated by a viewpoint – an elongated observation tower that runs the full length of the ridge. The newly modeled gables of the building create a new aerodynamic face for the structure. The aerodynamic shape of the house facilitates wind flow around it, thereby eliminating the formation of snowdrifts around the house.
The new design preserves the original function of the mountain lodge: a restaurant with year-round operation. It also includes accommodation for staff. A new feature is the viewpoint, which is situated at the height of the building's ridge.
The original load-bearing structure is made of wooden bolted frames, which we plan to preserve and renovate. The new wall and partition structures will be wooden with a plywood cladding. The outer shell is designed with gray-blue pre-weathered titanium zinc. The window frames will be wood-aluminum, in gray. The structure of the staircase to the viewpoint, as well as the viewpoint structure, will be made of steel and hot-dip galvanized.
