Area:287 m2

Projection: Eva Schilhart Faberová, Tomáš Pavlík
Structural design solution: Zbyněk Pechan
The project involves a complete reconstruction of two duplex penthouse apartments in Prague's Smíchov district. The aim of the construction intervention was to utilize the attic space and expand the living area on the top floor of the building. An outdoor terrace was also created, oriented towards the south and west. Through a series of incremental steps, the floor area of the apartments was increased by more than 30%. From the original layout of 3+kk for both apartments and a total living area of 217 m², two units with a layout of 4+kk and a separate studio with a total area of 287 m² were created.
During the reconstruction, strategies were chosen that focused on user comfort, durability, low-energy standards of all new constructions, and a simple and functional aesthetic.

Structure of the attic conversion
The original extension from the end of the 20th century was completely removed (except for the street-facing part of the roof) and replaced with a modern, highly insulated, and diffusely permeable wooden structure with glazing into hidden frames. The courtyard part of the roof structure was implemented as a ventilated roof covered with PREFA aluminum sheeting, drained into a gutter at the eaves. It is designed to be diffusely permeable, ventilated, with a vapor barrier and a safety waterproofing Delta MAXX. The facade is finished with a thin-layer plaster on Knauf Aquapanel façade boards.
The external shading is hidden in the ventilated facade, anchored to steel cables.

Load-bearing structures
Unprofessional interventions in the roof structure from the time of the conversion were removed, and missing struts were replaced with steel ties. The steel purlin, constructed only in part of the roof structure, was interconnected with the roof and extended around the entire perimeter of the building. These steps ensured the stability of the roof structure throughout its extent.
The ceiling separating the 6th and 7th floors was removed and replaced with a new beam ceiling, suspended from the central wall and steel purlin. The level of the new ceilings was lowered by approximately 375 mm to ensure compliance with thermal and acoustic insulation requirements and to create a fully functional living space on the level of the top floor.

Staircase
At the client's request, a wooden staircase was created in one of the units, suspended from beams made of curved safety glass with a radius of 900 mm, forming the staircase railing. The second staircase is made of steel, with steps of solid oak and a steel handrail.

Building openings fillings
The balcony doors to the terrace are wooden, with a hidden frame. They are shaded on the outside by electrically operated screens, hidden in the space of the ventilated facade. Interior shading is concealed in the ceilings of adjoining rooms wherever the space of the conversion allowed. All new interior doors were designed as frameless, with a hidden door frame. Frameless glass partitions of clear and frosted glass were used in parts of the interior.

Interior
In the apartment spaces, emphasis was placed on simplicity, easy maintenance, and durability of all elements. Solid oak flooring, full-surface ceramic and glass coverings, and large-format tiles were used.
