The current times are defined by high demand and low supply on the real estate market. Therefore, people seek alternative ways of living in the city centre of Bratislava.
The assignment for this project arose from the need to use the unused pool hall in a family house for living, and thus create another housing unit that can function independently within the house, yet remains connected to the original apartment on the floor.
This creates multi-generational living for a young couple with their parents, with enough privacy but the advantage of being close to each other.
The space had a problematic orientation and insufficient lighting, which we partially solved by cutting out new windows, so that they provide enough light and at the same time a connection with the garden.
We partitioned the space with a furniture wall made out of ash veneer, that separated the bedrooms with the staircase and thus created a dimensionally rational night zone. The bedrooms are oriented to the east, so that they get enough morning sun.
We deliberately left maximum space for the main living area. By inserting individual furniture elements, we create naturally separated zones of the entrance, dining room, kitchen or living room. It is deliberately embedded below the level of the surrounding space, thanks to which it acquires intimacy and a different perspective of height, but also points to the original use of the space.
The overall materiality is moderate, the only color accent is a blue beam with a column that points to the central supporting element of the space. The stainless steel cladding of the bathroom and toilet creates light reflections and partially compensates the lack of natural light in the depth of the layout.
With an arched curtain, it is possible to close the space for the evening and thus create a different spatial configuration and, at the same time, sufficient intimacy with the surrounding environment.
