La Vila Joiosa is one of the few areas on the Spanish Costa Brava coast between Benidorm and Alicante that has not yet been impacted by the tourist industry. While the city prepares for an invasion of travel agencies and developers, local authorities have decided to undertake a series of planned measures aimed at improving local infrastructure and ensuring future needs as well as controlling development.
The goal of this project is to design a strategic location for future development. The shape of the police station (CESPOL – Centro de Seguridad de la Policia Local) in the form of an irregular pentagon is derived from the alignment of the surrounding streets. The intention is to keep the building as compact and enclosed as possible so that it minimally blocks the city's development to the north from its central position. We aimed to keep the building as low as possible against the backdrop of high mountains and leftover agricultural land, so that it simply appears as an ordinary wall in the agricultural landscape.
The layout of the building is organized into three layers, concentrated around a central courtyard that illuminates the detention cells on the ground floor. One layer of the building is designated for public interaction, containing a hall, library, and rooms for witness interrogation. The second layer consists of offices and management. The third layer contains accommodation for employees and day rooms. On the ground floor, there is a shooting range, a garage for police vehicles, and an archive. The building material is concrete cast on-site into formwork. The walls are broken, enclosing the designated space and creating a series of skylights that illuminate individual rooms. The outer walls are unevenly perforated with openings that create grid windows.
