The loft apartment for a family of four is located in a classic Vinohrady apartment building from the early 20th century. It is a complete reconstruction and merging of two residential units from the 1990s, the quality of which was so poor that it had to start completely anew.
The apartment consists of a main living space with a kitchen, from which the parents' bedroom with a separate bathroom and an outdoor terrace facing the courtyard is accessible. The apartment has two children's rooms with a shared bathroom, a separate toilet, and a technical room. A key requirement of the owners was to cleverly utilize the loft space, so we designed atypical storage spaces and a built-in gallery for the children's room – playroom.
The style of the interior and materials are based on the design concept, where almost nothing from the original loft has been preserved. A fundamental decision was the choice of oak flooring, which left a limited color palette to ensure the overall impression is harmonious. Thus, the colors of the interior appear rather muted, with only a few colorful accents. The elements of the roof structure are painted a matte white, which has the advantage of blending better into the background of the drywall. The kitchen is designed with white MDF boards with a worktop and island made of dark gray Corian concrete. The central hallway is lined with MDF boards in white and light gray, making it appear somewhat wider. The doors to the apartment are replicas of original wooden doors. The parents' bedroom is dominated by a furniture wall in navy blue with oak shelf elements. The bathrooms are clad with large-format tiles and light gray wall tiles.
We are pleased with the precisely executed carpentry elements, such as the entry oak portal from the hallway to the living room and also with the fact that we managed to bring natural daylight from the roof into the hallway, creating a space that gained functional (light) and aesthetic (shape) added value. The solution for accessing the terrace through the bedroom was a typological conundrum, but life in the apartment ultimately showed that the decision was correct. The entrance to the bedroom is designed with flush doors that blend into the wall and do not compete with the doors – the portal into the living room. In the bedroom, thanks to large windows leading to the terrace, the feeling of the interior space continues outward.
