New Brewery Construction in Kroměříž – 1st Country Brewery
The right to brew beer in Kroměříž is approximately as old as the city itself. The buildings of the Town or Archiepiscopal brewery, which now serve different purposes, stand as a reminder. Historical continuity and rural family tradition led to the construction of a small brewery located on the outskirts of the city. The investor's wish was to create a building that would have timeless value for future generations.
The new building is situated in a former agricultural research area, home to various predominantly manufacturing companies. This area has not yet been urbanistically resolved in any way; each company utilizes existing buildings with minimal construction inputs. The new building is located on the edge of the site, in close proximity to agricultural production - a farm, fields, and open countryside. Our intention was to cultivate this urban periphery and utilize the potential of the site, which could be of tourist interest due to its view of the city and the surrounding area.
The brewery building is intended for beer production and distribution, and it houses a company shop. In the summer months, a summer garden is open on the upper terrace, which is located on the flat roof of the building and in the garden. Both places offer a wonderful view of the city of Kroměříž and the Hostýn Hills.
The layout and spatial design of the microbrewery were purposefully conceived to encompass all operational requirements within the smallest possible area. On the ground floor, there is a storage room with independent access, staff facilities, a beer maturation room, filling area, and the shop. Upstairs is the brewing space and fermentation room. The mass of the building responds to the functional content. The staircase is pushed outside the building, allowing access to the terrace without disrupting internal operations; this step resolved the layout and simultaneously divided the building in terms of mass. Given the nature of the operation, the staircase is unheated, encased in facing bricks cut in half, creating a pleasant structure on the inside. On the outer side, the staircase is a certain paraphrase of a "brewery chimney," symbolizing the prosperity of the site and simultaneously a new functional content in its current form. Additionally, at the investor's request, another access to the terrace was created with a separate external staircase.
The materials in the interior and exterior correlate with each other. Given the type of construction, we could afford to choose a rawer processing of details and the use of materials. Brick became an important element, appearing in both the exterior and interior. New facing bricks were used, as well as recycled bricks from demolition. The intent was to use materials that are of high quality and age gracefully. The walls are constructed from ceramic blocks, and the ceilings are made of exposed concrete with imprints from wooden formwork. The storage background is built with bricks. Floors are covered with an industrial screed, with brick tiles only in the shop and brewing space. Bottle green (brewery) color was chosen for the window frames and shutters, complementing the color of the bricks and referring to the past of brewery buildings and their color solutions.

The building of the 1st rural brewery is set in a closed garden, which is enclosed by a high brick wall that was already present before the building’s realization. A relaxation space with a pleasant atmosphere is created here. The garden is now used by visitors to the brewery during summer stops and rides around the area. Stable serving tables were placed in the garden and on the upper terrace during the construction.
