The National Design Award is a prestigious award organized annually by the Slovak Design Center. This year, works in the field of communication design were awarded, divided into the categories of campaign, books and publications, animation and video, digital, identity, cover and object, space, font, poster and visual, new horizons and student design. The exhibition space is located in the building of the former Hurban military barracks, where the Slovak Design Center is currently located. However, these spaces were inaccessible so far, in their original state.
The concept of the exhibition was created together with the visual identity from the graphic studio Andrej & Andrej. We have worked with the themes of the former barracks and deliberately took over the principle of military order or decoration.
We designed a simple exhibition system - objects that were based on the content of categories and a given proportion of rooms. The concept of lighting is also followed by this principle. The deliberately chosen military green color creates a neutral surface for the exhibited objects, at the same time visually unifying the individual elements of the exhibition system.
We did not fundamentally interfere with the original state of the spaces, we inserted the exhibition as a new layer. This approach is an interpretation of the principle by which the objects are presented in its real environment - on the street, in the shelf, or in digital space, without consciously influencing and modifying its surroundings.
