The apartment is located in one of the seven
Functionalist buildings by architects Jaroslav Stockar and Josef Šolc in Prague 7. The building was designed together with a cinema as a commission from the Pension Fund of the employees of the National Bank between 1937-40. The apartment reconstruction builds on the unique atmosphere of the place and complements the preserved elements in the house in line with the requirements for contemporary living.
The investor's requirement was to design the apartment for rent for a maximum of two tenants, utilizing the relatively small area while preserving the unique atmosphere referencing the "gesamtkunstwerk" of the entire building, and the block itself. A special requirement from the client was to use a combination of black and white in the surfaces or materials, so that this color dialogue does not limit future tenants.
The entrance to the apartment is from the shared spaces directly into a small kitchen. Here is also a shoe cabinet covered with stainless steel, which optically enlarges the space. This area acts as a filter between the bathroom and the living space. The kitchen unit and other furnishings were designed to fit the small layout. To visually enlarge and unify the space, ceramic tiles with a geometric pattern were used. These tiles are applied to the floors of the kitchen and bathroom and also as a backsplash at the kitchen unit. The entrance to the bathroom has wooden sliding doors, which are glazed in a gray shade. In the bathroom space, there is a built-in washing machine and sink in a unified block, which is unified with the same material. The living space is oriented towards a quiet courtyard. There is a built-in bed with storage space, a dining table, and other necessary storage spaces. The original parquet floor has been preserved. The newly designed built-in furniture maximizes the layout possibilities of the apartment without visually reducing the space. In contrast, free vintage furniture is used in the interior. A striking element of the interior is a chandelier of Czech production from the 1950s in Brussels style. The lighting atmosphere of the space is completed by wall lights.
The simple dialogue between new entries and period elements creates a timeless atmosphere in the interior.
