Kindergarten Behind the Gate

Kindergarten Behind the Gate
Cooperation:Tereza Mandíková, Kristina Sudreová
Address: Jana Vojny 1220, Pacov, Czech Republic
Project:2011
Completion:2018

On a spacious plot of land north of the center of the village of Pacov stood the original kindergarten with five departments, which was in unsatisfactory technical condition. A new building has been designed that meets the parameters of a contemporary modern structure for the education of preschool children. It consists of a main two-story building and five single-story pavilions connected by a corridor. The pavilions, which house the individual departments, are complemented by large wooden terraces. The entire preschool complex is connected by paved surfaces. Between the entrance to the main building and Jana Vojny Street, there is a parking lot for staff and visitors, and deliveries are directed to the eastern side of the main building. The concept of the new kindergarten building's design is the arrangement of the individual ground-level pavilions - departments into a large garden. The design utilizes two types of pavilions that differ in their internal layout. The pavilions are rotated 90° relative to each other, creating interesting semi-enclosed spaces for the children to spend time in. The main building is located on the northern part of the plot. Its mass grades from the ground floor to the second floor, where the classrooms are located. The generous cantilever of the second floor clearly defines the main entrance to the building. The main entrance leads to a common area/hall that runs between the individual pavilions, creating an equally interesting communication space that connects all the pavilions and facilitates their serviceability. The simple blocks of the individual pavilions are pierced with a minimal number of generous openings, with their expression largely defined by a large loggia that provides a connection to the exterior. In the same spirit of contrasting solid surfaces and generous openings, the main building is treated. The pavilions are clad in larch boarding, while the loggias are accentuated with brightly colored panels. The mass of the service area is treated in a neutral gray plaster.
