Kindergarten on Tylovo Embankment

Kindergarten on Tylovo Embankment
Architect: Josef Gočár
Address: Tylovo nábřeží 691, Hradec Králové, Czech Republic
Completion:1926-28

On the north-south axis of the school complex on Tylovo embankment, a kindergarten (No. 691) was designed by Josef Gočár as a connecting architectural link between the two primary schools. Between 1927-28, it was built according to his plans by the builders of the entire complex J. Novotný and J. Vyleťal. This is the author's first purely constructivist building.
The kindergarten connects to the gables of the primary school buildings with its eastern and western wings. The southern façade with the main entrance faces the embankment, while the northern side, with its walkway and terraces, opens to the schoolyard. The nearly 2.5-meter height difference between the embankment sidewalk and the schoolyard was utilized in the design and architectural solution of the building.
The street façade is symmetrical. In the center, the entrance doors are located in a glass wall covered by a reinforced concrete slab supported by two columns. The brick street sections are finished with břízolit plaster in a natural shade. The courtyard façade is also symmetrical, visually lightened by the covered walkways around the central arched section with connecting terraces and outdoor staircases of both wings. The protruding reinforced concrete structure creates a prominent plasticity and rhythmic division of the façade. Above the flat roof, a tall chimney of the central heating system rose.
The change in functional use to a school cafeteria in 1985 according to the design of Ing. V. Rohlíček required significant construction interventions in both the interior and exterior of the building, including the demolition of the chimney. However, the structural and technical condition was improved, and the building was saved from complete devastation.
