Having lain dormant for many years, the site of the former gasworks in west Amsterdam has recently been transformed into an urban park for sports and recreation. The existing industrial structures have been renovated to house a diverse range of cultural and community-based activities. One of these, the Ladderhouse (previously used to store ladders), has been converted into a clubhouse for a netball club. It is a small building hemmed in between pitches, trees and neighbouring structures.
The Ladderhouse has been completely refurbished, its original form retained and enlarged with an extruded glazed extension. This greenhouse-like volume houses the canteen on the ground floor with a meeting room and a platform for window cleaning located on two wooden floors above. A freestanding brightly coloured volume in the original building contains all the remaining elements of the programme: the bar, kitchen, toilets, cloakroom and service and storage spaces.
The design embodies a balanced and practical organization, where the adjoining old and new are both attributed equal significance.
