The café of the research institute in Prague's Dejvice serves its employees and is located in a fairly cramped elongated space on the first floor of the main building, overlooking the treetops at Fleming Square.
To accommodate a sufficient number of seats in this less-than-ideal space while ensuring a sense of privacy for the patrons, we chose a layout of low boxes inspired by the tradition of classic Viennese cafés, where guests sit relatively close to each other, but thanks to the mutual rotation of individual seating arrangements, they have sufficient privacy in the lively café atmosphere. Such arrangements can still be found today in Vienna at the legendary Café Muzeum or at Café Diglas on Wollzeile.
Wooden tables with marble tops complement classic Thonet chairs in natural beech. On the front wall are large illuminated clocks reflected in the opposite large mirror, and the bar made of white artificial stone is lit by lamps in the shape of laboratory glass. We fitted wooden handles in piano lacquer with brass fittings on the entry glass doors, which were previously installed on the swinging doors at the main staircase but were removed due to fire regulations. We therefore used them in the café so that this trace from the house would not disappear completely.
