Spring, summer, autumn, winter... and spring

Area:140 m2

What?
The space of the hall in the former school in Mikulov was violated by a new ceiling during the previous regime. Thus, a hardly usable attic space was created, partitioned at a height of one and a half meters by beams in a regular rhythm. The roof was hidden from view and waited. Meanwhile, the spaces below the attic were reconstructed, so there was no going back; the space could not be unified again.

Why?
When we discovered it, we prohibited the realization of the project that would have cut the beams, thus damaging the tectonics of the structure and leaving everything covered in drywall. That was the proposal of the local savage construction engineers. We were looking for a way that would preserve the spirit and logic of the space, meet the requirements of heritage protection, and also offer comfortable living.

How?

The fundamental decision was to leave everything as it is. One of our main principles is to recognize when it is better not to intervene. But it was necessary to connect the space and overcome the beams. We enlarged the rectification openings into the form of passages. The beams separate the individual "rooms." The walls are only imaginary, just like in Kim Ki-duk's film. Now, we just need to find a buyer who will be excited about the project.

For whom?
The study went through several phases; we even had a "family" variant. In the end, builders from distant Australia responded - he is Australian, she is originally from Moravia, who were able to appreciate the authenticity of the space. In Australia, there is generally respect for anything old; it is a scarce commodity there. Thanks to that, we could realize a minimal variant that does not divide or fragment the space in any way.
With its one hundred and forty square meters, the apartment is the largest studio for miles around. The bathroom with the hallway is located in the original annex. The apartment has its own spacious terrace, which is accessible through a newly punched dormer. Sleeping is done on a box in the final section of the space. The project had a very tight budget, which sometimes led to compromise solutions and some raw details. Nevertheless, the overall concept was successfully maintained.
