Idea competition for the placement of the New National Theatre in Prague
Architect: Ladislav Machoň

Contest:1922

The competition is primarily regulatory and the establishment of a theater is not so urgent that it must be located in the currently available space in Prague today. For this reason, the designers choose the best location: the city center, and adjust the still unresolved "Republic Square," demolishing the Josefská barracks. The communication assumptions are connections to Karlín "Poříčí," connections to Letná "Revolution Boulevard" and "Příkopy." The secondary communication is Truhlářská Street. A direct connection with "Florenc" will also be added to these existing routes. The solid buildings are a group housing the financial directorate with the customs office, a row of houses near the "Chamber of Commerce" and "Municipal House." The proposed layout creates a cohesive space, complements the existing buildings with new masses, and organizes the outlets of the individual streets. The theater building is positioned perpendicular to the customs office axis and leaves as much space as possible between the theater and the ongoing communication routes.
