The idea of the Brno Technology Park, which originated in the early nineties of the last century, is coming to fruition. The bold concept, based on the urban planning of architect Peter Foggo, has gradually begun to be realized; while it has had to be modified over time for various reasons, the basic urban idea – to integrate industrial, technological, and administrative functions naturally into the urban structure – has come to fruition.
The Czech technology park in Brno is increasingly attracting leading international and domestic companies for its administrative, research, or high-tech production spaces. Notable examples include FEI Czech Republic, Siemens, SGI, Timken, Czech mobile, and Honeywell Controls. Since it is a truly attractive zone, also connected to the campus of the Brno University of Technology, the multinational company IBM has chosen it as its administrative headquarters. The buildings for this significant company were designed by the firm K4 Architects & Engineers.
Positive mutual experiences from the cooperation between the Brno Technology Park and K4 Architects & Engineers on the projects for FEI Czech Republic and Symbol Technologies resulted last year in another project. "At that time, we were tasked with refining and updating the original concept of development in zone A for the specific client IBM with an administrative complex for about 1300 employees," says architect Pacek. "These projects for administrative buildings in zone A were, unlike the two previous ones, simpler in terms of layout, but more demanding in some technical and architectural solutions."
In the project for IBM, there are certain specificities that were not present in its predecessors. "We are trying to implement several modern artistic objects from among the educators at the Faculty of Fine Arts at Brno University of Technology," explains architect Vladimír Pacek from K4. "It's somewhat of a missionary job, where we need to convince the investor of the meaningfulness of such an investment and persuade contacted artists to adopt a standard approach friendly to the private client. It is a very interesting role."
