Hotel Avion

Hotel Avion
Architect: Bohuslav Fuchs
Address: Česká ulice, Brno, Czech Republic
Completion:1926-1927

One of the symbols of Czech avant-garde architecture.
In constrained conditions, Fuchs managed to design a hotel with 50 rooms for the hotelier Kostelecký!
The narrow and deep building plot did not allow for the construction of intermediate walls as a load-bearing element, so the ceiling parts of the building were supported by reinforced concrete pillars of the gable walls. This allowed Fuchs to variably divide the interior spaces. He especially utilized this in the café areas, where he managed to mitigate the sense of constraint from disharmonious dimensions through vertical interpenetration of spaces and the use of galleries.
The street façade is lightened by large windows, porcelain tiles, and white opal glass. In the context of the surroundings, it creates an interesting verticality, height-wise responding to the neighboring buildings.
Inspired by the Avion hotel, Pavel Janák built a very similar hotel Juliš at Wenceslas Square in Prague.
