Football Stadium St. Jakob

    Architects Herzog & deMeuron were contacted by the client only after the initial project phase, which had already set the rules for the mass expansion of the stadium and commercially usable areas. They were attracted by the opportunity to co-design such an extensive project with a football stadium and shops; however, they did not wish to maintain control over every detail. They focused their attention on a few key elements that would give the place an unmistakable identity - for example, the transparent colored shell of the stadium, a color concept based on the complementary colors of red (the interior of the stadium) and green (the field), the proportions and construction of the arena's roof (flat from below), long horizontal facades of the retirement home as well as the lobbies and entrance areas of the stadium and home.
