Mladá Boleslav has its first brewery! Right below the castle, just a few minutes' walk from the Old Town Square, lies a historical industrial zone that is now undergoing gradual restoration. The building of the former Baroque malt house has been repurposed for various industrial uses over the centuries, fell into disrepair in the second half of the last century, and now the newly opened eMBe brewery has revived this almost forgotten tradition. It produces five types of craft beer according to its own recipes and includes a spacious restaurant as part of the project.
The concept of the design is inspired by the character of Mladá Boleslav, the Czech leader in the automotive industry. The very name of the brewery is derived from the name of the city, or if you will, from the legendary Škoda car model, and this story runs through its entire identity. The project accompanies everything from the logo and its application to the interior design. Although it might seem that beer and cars are primarily a man's domain, several women stand behind the authorship of the project. The initial ideas behind the project come from architects Barbora Mluvková and Ivana Dušičková from the Konceptual studio.
"When I first visited the former malt house with the investor, it was clear to me that the automotive present of Mladá Boleslav and the industrial past of the place would play a significant role in the project. The Škoda 1000 MB model is indeed a world-famous design piece, and when we thought about how to approach the entire concept, inspiration from this legend prevailed." says Barbora Mluvková.
The restaurant space consists of three parts with different atmospheres. The main hall is designed as a pub, where large groups of friends can sit at communal tables or individuals and smaller groups can join each other. It smoothly transitions into a room with brewing systems, which offers a quieter atmosphere in the evening and brews beer during the day. In the center of the room, the original well is revealed under a glass cover. The lager storage area connects to the brewing area and is linked to the restaurant by a glass view. Additional lager tanks are located in the hallway connecting the taproom and the brewing area. The beer on tap goes directly from these tanks. The third type of seating that the restaurant offers is a lounge suitable for private gatherings.
As mentioned, the interior design itself was inspired by the industrial history of the site and the design of the Škoda 1000 MB model. A distinctive feature of the interior is the lighting. Original scissor wall lights once illuminated the workbenches in the factory. Other lights, on the other hand, refer to the car’s headlights. The light above the bar counter is made directly from refurbished original headlights from the aforementioned Škoda model. The benches and chairs evoke the upholstery of this car.
Valuable original elements such as brick vaults and stone columns have been revealed and restored, while missing brick flooring has been replaced. All metal elements in the interior are black or copper; stainless steel is used only for gastronomic and brewing technologies. The blacksmith's finish refers to the industrial past of the building, while copper corresponds to the material of the brewing vessels. This concept is also reflected in the restrooms, where all faucets and fixtures are black, while the grab bars and structures of the sanitary partitions are copper. To prevent the metal from appearing too harsh, everything is complemented with oak solid wood. In the case of the communal tables, they consist of massive wooden boards over three meters long.
The visual identity is also inspired by the Škoda 1000 MB car. Whether it’s the elegant shape of the steering wheel, typography derived from the model's emblem, or illustrations of the car itself. It blends adapted photographs with period themes and modern typography in a timeless color palette. The brewery logo has been applied in many applications, such as beer glasses, exterior signage, interior decorations, staff uniforms, and gift vouchers. The project also included the creation of web design and the rules for applying visual identity.
The concept of the restaurant with the brewery was designed by Barbora Mluvková and is reflected throughout the entire project from its name to the interior design. Andreea Bora enriched the initial inspiration with the visual identity design. This collaboration between two women led to a comprehensive design of the brewery and restaurant with a unique identity that permeates the entire project while still retaining the original idea.
