At the end of 2007, a new civil protection center was opened on the outskirts of Innichen in the South Tyrolean high mountain valley of Puster. Inside the building is located the local volunteer fire brigade, the medical service of the white cross, and the mountain rescue service.
The project responds in its shape to the location on the eastern edge of the village and the small scale of family homes in the immediate vicinity; it creates a base in that part of the village, which, as is usual, dilutes at its edges. The training fire tower represents a symbol - a frame for panoramic views and a welcoming gesture - an oversized 3-D postcard.
The mass of the rescue service center is ten times larger than the surrounding houses. To mitigate this contrast, the building utilizes the topography of the site and integrates itself from the north into the slopes of the mountain.
