The name of the apartment building MONDRIAN is a tribute to the homonymous Dutch painter. Piet Mondrian was one of the founders of neoplasticism and the "De Stijl" movement, whose style was based on the abstraction of form and color, defining straight lines and clearly delineated primary colors, which also extended into architecture. The "Mondrian-esque" articulated western facade is characterized by a colorful play of red, blue, and yellow balcony view precast elements, transforming the facade into a large-scale abstract 3D artwork that is accessible at any time to anyone. The use of simple, clear spatial elements defines the overall expression of the apartment building with a desire to enhance the freshness and vitality of the architecture.
The proposed apartment building is situated on undeveloped land in the Bratislava neighborhood of Ružinov, west of the gravel pit lake "Rohlík." The area in question is bordered to the south by a sports area of a primary school, to the east by a business academy complex, and to the north by a polyclinic complex. From an ideological-operational standpoint, the proposed object lies on the connecting north-south axis between Štrkovecké center and the community service complex of the Trávniky district, dominated by pedestrian movement. In terms of broader links, the main advantages are suitable connections to community services, relative tranquility of the environment, and immediate access to the natural park complex of water surfaces and greenery.
The mass-spatial solution of the apartment building follows the shape of the lot - an elongated rectangle, which is utilized 100% for the building itself and the accompanying parking areas. The building has one underground and nine above-ground floors with a flat roof. The structure is height-zoned into three layers: an elevated ground floor, a six-story body, and a "landscape" of cantilevered boxes on the roof. The underground level contains garages for personal vehicles with an entrance ramp and storage rooms, while the ground floor houses commercial spaces, and the upper levels contain apartments. The ground floor is perforated with openings – on the northern side, it opens up to the lake area through "Le Corbusier"-style pillars, under which there is covered parking. In the southern part, the mass of the ground floor is interrupted by a pedestrian passage positioned at the golden ratio.
The one hundred meter long body of the apartment building contains two dominant facades, whose unifying element is a bordering white band running along the main body of the house. The western facade facing the lake is composed as a neoplastic painting in colors of red, blue, and yellow, created by projecting balcony slabs in lengths that are multiples of the basic 1.5-meter module. The eastern facade features recessed horizontal bands of window openings interspersed with a raster of irregularly placed winter gardens with frameless glazing. The connection to the western facade is only suggested by the colored walls of the stairwell sections in "Mondrian" color schemes.
An independently articulated part of the Mondrian residential building is the roof "habitat," a system of cantilevered boxes that houses larger, mostly duplex apartments. Each of the apartments has a generously sized terrace by the day area and a higher "intimate" terrace by the night area. Optically sheltered terraces provide uninterrupted views of Bratislava's landmarks such as the Castle, the Slavín memorial, or the Kamzík transmitter against the backdrop of the Little Carpathians.
Fortunately, the material composition of the roof residential boxes managed to incorporate aluminum corrugated sheet, despite the massive opposition from some apartment users who protested in shock, arguing that "they do not intend to live in a garage." However, the purity of the silver sheen of the aluminum cladding could not be maintained permanently. The owners moved in and got involved... Today, the roof habitat is "adorned" with arbitrary creations of wooden garden shelters from Baumax.
