Penthouse duplex in Prague's Letná, a six-month road trip with children across the United States, and a passion for the Czech graffiti scene and art in general. From a simple request for minor layout adjustments to facilitate family life, where children will gradually start going to school one after the other after the "last" holidays, a complete facelift of the apartment crystallized during the design and preparation.

The first renovation took place together with the purchase of part of the high attic of a tenement house from the late 1930s several years ago in collaboration with Majaq architects. From this period comes the solution based on the principle of an open layout in the lower part of the duplex around the central chimney wall. The floors are connected by a direct steel staircase with partially glass railings. The upper two bedrooms are connected by a roof extension, from which there is an exit to a west-facing terrace overlooking the courtyard.

The distinctive personalities and temperaments of our long-time friends are reflected not only in the colorful paintings and installations that gradually filled their living space but also in the chosen concept of modifications and shifts in the interior. We entered into the diversity and relative habitation with new materials and other colors hidden in the carpenter elements of wardrobes and built-in dressing rooms, thus the color scheme of the interior constantly changes with its everyday use. The original concrete screeds on the walls and oak parquet floors have been preserved, which underwent renovation with a re-toning to their natural shade. The kitchen cabinetry has been upgraded; there’s no need to part with items that work. The new geometry of the staircase railing, on the other hand, justified the new glass after considerations. All other surfaces and elements have been maximally simplified, brightened, and harmonized so that the elevated space of the open layout continues to stand out, while the colors of the paintings and supplemented furniture dominate against the backdrop of clean walls with minimal details. The wings of the interior doors with hidden frames are therefore made in re-coated white paint matching the adjoining walls. The walk-in wardrobe from the entrance is defined against the entrance by a large-format mirrored wall with integrated doors to the bathroom and toilet. The original separate loggia to the courtyard was glazed at the level of the facade, creating a bright niche expanding the hallway with upholstered seating and simultaneously providing another exhibition area. Point. The colorful accents are closed with light and dark gray cement screed in the bathroom with small format anthracite mosaic of the shower area.

We confirmed the rule of working with empathy for specific people, their lives, and needs. For stepping outside our comfortable minimalist design zone, we were inspired by the investors themselves with their distinct taste and the investor's nonconformist wardrobe. The whole process, also due to communication at a distance, was not easy, but we are definitely grateful for the opportunity.
