Biography
Arnošt (Ernest) Mühlstein was a Jewish architect who worked in Prague in the 1920s and 1930s. Before World War II, he emigrated to England and later to Australia, where he changed his name to Ernst Edward Milston. He studied at the Prague German Technical School and then studied under Jan Kotěra at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague. Kotěra's influence is evident in his early works in Bubeneč. In 1924, he founded a studio together with Victor Fürth, with whom he built a number of villas ranging from neo-baroque to functionalist styles during the 1920s and 1930s. They also designed apartment buildings, including small housing units for social housing. They are also the authors of the design for the Te-Ta department store on Jungmannova Street. Outside of Prague, they built in Náchod, Česká Skalice, and Cortina d'Ampezzo. Ernst Mühlstein, along with Kamil Roškot, is also the author of the competition proposal for the Eskomptní Bank building. Before the German occupation of Czechoslovakia, he managed to emigrate to England and later moved to Australia, where he settled in Melbourne. Here, he changed his name to Ernst Edward Milston. From 1955 to 1957, he collaborated with Australian architect Don Hendry Fulton.
