Biography
Aldo Favini was an Italian engineer and structural designer. He came from a family of construction entrepreneurs specializing in reinforced concrete. In 1930, he began his education at a school for construction professionals in Rome. His teachers were Mario Ridolfi and Vittorio Serao, who hired him as a collaborator on a competitive bridge project over the Tiber at Foro Mussolini a month after he graduated. In 1937, he enrolled in the Faculty of Engineering at the University of Rome. He completed his studies in July 1942 and submitted his thesis on a bridge over the Tiber. Two days after graduating, he was called up as a second lieutenant to the artillery. Later that year, while on military service, he passed the state examination at the University of Bologna. In September 1943, he managed to cross the border and was interned in Switzerland. A month later, he began his teaching career in Mürren, where he lectured on the fundamentals of construction sciences. In Lausanne, he met Ernesto Nathan Rogers, Angelo Mangiarotti, Vicem Magistretti, and others. In 1945, Rector Stucchi transferred him to the Zurich Polytechnic, and he was assigned to Winterthur, where he conducted research on thin shells. In July, he returned to Rome, and in October of the same year, he moved to Milan, where he began collaborating with the construction company Mario Tamburini, serving as the technical director and head of projects until 1956. While working for the construction company, he published his first article on thin shells in 1946 titled "Calculation of Thin Conical Shells," and in 1950, on the advice of Gustavo Colonnetti, he traveled to France with Silvano Zorzi to meet French engineer Eugene Freyssinet and got acquainted with engineer Bernard Laffaille. In 1951, he patented a cable anchoring system for prestressed reinforced concrete, known as the "Favini System." After completing his tenure at the construction company, he began his own professional practice in Milan in 1956. In his design work, he focused on the area of prestressed reinforced concrete structures.
