BiographyWillhelm Willi Kehlstadt was a Swiss architect who, after graduating from high school, began an apprenticeship with Emil Faesche (1865-1915). He then studied at the Technical University of Stuttgart as a student of
Theodor Fischer and
Paul Bonatz. After completing his foreign internship, he worked for the
Pfister brothers in Zurich. Following his victory in the competition for the Zwinglihaus parish center, he established his own office in Basel. This was followed by residential buildings in Bruderholz and industrial constructions. Before World War II, he built a slaughterhouse in Basel. He subsequently worked for the pharmaceutical industry: the Sandoz research institute and the Swiss Vaccination Institute. In the 1940s, together with architects Bräuning, Leu, Dürig, and Brodtbeck, he designed the expansion of the city casino in Basel. At the end of his career, he planned the expansion of the Basel Eye Clinic and the renovation of the zoo, which he did not live to see completed. He was the first chairman of the Basel section of the Swiss Federation of Architects (BSA) and chairman of the professional ethics committee of the Association of Architects and Engineers in Basel.
