BiographyVilhelm Lauritzen was a Danish modernist architect. He graduated in 1921 from the Royal Danish Academy of Fine Arts in Copenhagen. In 1928, he founded his own studio Vilhelm Lauritzen Architects, where he worked until 1969. In the 1920s, he created in a classicist style. However, at the end of the 1920s, he undertook a journey through Central Europe, where he became acquainted with the latest trends and construction innovations of functionalist style, which inspired him to his own restrained interpretation of modernism. His first major project was the department store Daells Varehus (1928-35) in Copenhagen, which was one of the first examples of modern architecture in Denmark. Furthermore, he won a competition for the first Copenhagen airport, which was built between 1937 and 1939. Another significant project was the building of Radio Danet (Radiohuset). Lauritzen also designed furniture for his buildings. Particularly valued are his table lamps from the 1930s.
