Allies & Morrison

"Building in Cities and the Construction of Cities" - on this topic, one of the founders of the renowned London studio Allies and Morrison will speak during his visit to the Czech Republic. Bob Allies, along with the director of the Design Museum in London, Deyan Sudjic, accepted the invitation from the Bakala Foundation and the Kaplicky Centre Foundation to select the best work from the Kaplicky Internship 2017 architectural competition. The author of the winning work will be announced after the lecture and will receive a three-month internship at Allies and Morrison studio. Attendees of the lecture, which will take place on October 5, 2017, at 6 PM in the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art, can look forward not only to insights from prominent figures in global architecture on contemporary urbanism but also to the announcement of the competition results.

Allies and Morrison have established themselves as one of the most prominent architectural firms in the world over their 33 years of operation. One of the founders of the studio will present some of the more than two hundred architectural and urban projects that the studio has realized, primarily in the UK and the Middle East, during his lecture. Notable projects by Allies and Morrison include, for example, the urban plan for the complex for the 2012 Summer Olympics in London or the redevelopment of the extensive King's Cross area in London. The studio also participated in the reconstruction of the exterior of the Design Museum building, in which the institution has been operating since November 2016.

Bob Allies will discuss the role of architecture in the city with another prominent guest, the director of the aforementioned Design Museum in London, Deyan Sudjic, after his lecture. Both were invited to Prague as members of the expert jury which will decide the winner of the 3rd year of the Kaplicky Internship architectural competition.

The Kaplicky Internship is a program that provides fresh graduates from architectural fields at Czech universities with the opportunity to undertake a three-month paid internship at one of the prestigious London studios. This allows them to experience working on significant projects with renowned architects.

The winner of the first edition (2015) was Ondřej Michálek, who spent three months at the London studio Eva Jiricna Architects. The following year, the competition was won by Petra Ross, who completed a three-month internship at Zaha Hadid Architects in the summer of 2017.

The program is organized by the Bakala Foundation in collaboration with the London Design Museum. The project partner is the Kaplicky Centre Foundation.

The Bakala couple are long-time supporters of the DOX Centre for Contemporary Art and, since 2014, also of the Design Museum in London. This institution was founded 28 years ago by British designer Sir Terence Conran to support young talented designers. In November 2016, the Design Museum moved to the newly renovated unique building of the former Commonwealth Institute in Kensington, West London.
