Home is where all devices automatically connect to the internet. Do you choose how you will bring the internet into your home or are you looking to connect it to a cottage? We will introduce you to several types of connections.
The internet can reach your home through two streams – via cable or air. What is the difference between them? Which one is suitable for home and which one is better for a cottage?
Cable Connection
A popular way to connect to the internet is through cable television. To use this option, you should be within the coverage area of cable networks, and the relevant network should be brought into the building where you live. Then, you just need a technician to create a simple connection for you. You will also need a cable modem for a cable connection. This can either be rented from your provider or purchased. Additionally, you will need a cable that connects the modem to the computer or other network device.
The advantage is high speed in both directions (download and upload) and higher reliability compared to wireless connection options. One of the few disadvantages is coverage. Although the reach of cable networks is becoming more widespread, in more remote areas, you may have to opt for ADSL/VDSL or some form of wireless connection.
Fixed ADSL Connection
If you have a fixed telephone line connection in your apartment, you can use one of the other high-speed internet options – DSL connection. In our context, ADSL or VDSL technology. To take advantage of fixed internet, you will need a modem in addition to the connection itself. It is best to choose one with a Wi-Fi router. This provides not only the option of secure connection via cable but also through a wireless Wi-Fi network.
This fixed home internet is significantly more stable than Wi-Fi or mobile internet. Just like with cable connections, it is resistant to adverse weather conditions. However, how quickly pages actually load for you is also influenced by the age of the telephone line and the distance from the telephone exchange. The closer you live to it, the faster you will surf. Although it is much more accessible than cable connections, there are still places that it does not reach.
Wireless 4G/5G LTE Internet
Do you desire cheap internet not only at home but also for travel or your cottage? Mobile operators offer a fast and easy connection without cables using 3G, 4G, and even in some places today, 5G LTE internet.
What do you need to browse the web carefreely? A special Wi-Fi modem, a data SIM card, and a free electrical outlet. You insert the SIM card into the modem, connect it to electricity, turn it on, and connect to the network via PC. You can connect a computer, laptop, mobile phone, or tablet to this Wi-Fi network. The advantage of such a connection is its availability and portability. 5G is currently offered only by Nordic Telecom at selected locations in the country.
Wireless Wi-Fi Connection from Local Providers
Providers disseminate the internet signal from a central transmitter to your receiving antenna – the access point. This antenna needs to be placed in a suitable location – on the roof or behind a window. A cable from the antenna then leads directly to the computer or home Wi-Fi router.
The only requirement for connection is direct visibility between the antenna and the central transmitter, and the assumption that the signal will not be disturbed by another network. It helps if you choose a provider that operates in the 5 GHz band or higher. The quality of the connection is significantly better compared to an ADSL connection; however, transmission through the air has its drawbacks, mainly a poor signal during unfavorable weather conditions.
