Karel CÍSAŘ MODERNOLOGY – Art after Postmodern Art
If the "archival impulse" characterized the art of the 1990s, in which artists tried to present and make accessible neglected or suppressed areas of cultural history, today we can speak directly of a "historical turn." A special place in this tendency is occupied by artists who engage in researching modernity in their work. We will trace the theoretical implications of the "historical turn" from the documenta XII exhibition, through the 5th Berlin Biennale, to selected positions of contemporary Czech art.
Karel Císař (*1972) works at the Philosophy Institute of the Czech Academy of Sciences. From 2001 to 2008, he lectured on philosophy at the Academy of Fine Arts in Prague, and since 2008, he has been an assistant professor in the field of aesthetics and theory of art at the AAAD. Among other things, he is the author of the books What is Photography? (Herrmann and Sons, 2004), Markéta Othová (Walther König, 2010), Things I Don’t Talk About with Anyone (Agite, 2010) and the curator of the exhibitions Memories of the Future, Václav Špála Gallery, 2009, Any-instant-whatever, Bunkier Sztuki, Krakow, 2009 and 50% Grey, MoCP, Chicago, 2010.
