The image of today's Japan is often limited to the hectic life in megacities and overlooks the long-standing symbiosis of Japanese people with natural elements. Similarly, the aspect of natural disaster representing evolutionary milestones in Japanese architecture is hard to fathom for a European. While the earthquake in Kobe marked the end of postmodern excess and a shift towards minimalism, the tsunami in Fukushima caused a return to traditions through new materials.
