In the new lecture series, the association Pěstuj prostor focuses on the intersections, overlaps, and differences between architecture and design. In the introductory “double lecture” with discussion, Austrian architect, designer, and one of the creative directors of Preciosa Lighting, Michael Vasku, will take the stage alongside Czech historian and design theorist Adam Štěch from the group OKOLO. The lecture will be held online on Thursday, April 29, 2021, at 6 PM.

Both Adam Štěch and Michael Vasku will concentrate on two specific themes present in both architecture and design, the understanding of which can distinguish the two disciplines: the phenomenon of authorship and the type and form of assignment and determination of realization. Adam Štěch will address these aspects using examples from modern “gesamtkunstwerk” – showcasing architectural examples from the 20th century, rich in unique designer solutions for details, furniture, and lighting. Michael Vasku will primarily draw from his previous practice, a deep interest in history and digital technology, and his extraordinary ability to connect these two fields. The dialogical nature of the lecture evening will be enhanced by dividing the event into two parts, framed by a moderated discussion.

The following parts of the lecture series will take a similar format, featuring personalities from both Czech and international architecture and design (as well as visual arts) who work in similar fields but differ in their perspectives, methodologies, education, and generational experience. “Participants in the series, prepared by the association Pěstuj prostor with the support of the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the city of Plzeň, and the Czech Architecture Foundation, include Kristina Fišerová, Martin Hrdina, Jana Potiron, Jiří Přihoda, and Patrik Hábl,” revealed architect and architectural historian Petr Klíma from the association Pěstuj prostor, which is organizing the series of lectures.

Michael Vasku is an architect and designer of Czech origin, born and permanently based in Vienna. He studied in Vienna, Shanghai, and London. Together with Andreas Klug, he founded the studio Vasku & Klug in 2011, whose work encompasses architecture and design, including installations and objects. In addition to the actual realizations, the Vienna studio, which also has a branch in Prague, focuses on so-called design strategy, which involves the relationship between business strategy and design thinking. In their works, Vasku and Klug often explore and reinterpret cultural archetypes and create spaces and objects that can evoke human emotions. Since 2014, they have received several prestigious design awards, including the Red Dot Award. In 2015, they received this award for their realizations for Preciosa Lighting, which they have jointly led as creative directors since 2016. From 2012, Michael Vasku worked for several years as an educator at Tomas Bata University in Zlín. In the past, he has participated in several projects for Czechdesign, such as the exhibitions Design Match and Stolečku, prostři se!

Adam Štěch is a historian and theorist of design and architecture who engages with both disciplines as a curator and publicist. After studying art history at Charles University in Prague, he worked as an editor at the magazine Dolce Vita from 2009 to 2017. In 2009, he was among the founders of the creative group OKOLO, with which he prepared dozens of publishing and exhibition projects in the Czech Republic and abroad. He has contributed texts on design and architecture to many domestic and foreign media, including magazines such as Art & Antiques, Elle Decoration, Wallpaper, Modernism, Damn, Cool Hunting, Domus, Architonic, Mark, Frame, A10, and SightUnseen. He also worked as an editor for magazines Architect+ and Vogue CS, and recently returned to work at Dolce Vita. Since 2013, he has been teaching design history at the Higher Vocational School of Visual Communication Scholastika in Prague. He is the author of the publication Inside Utopia, published in 2017 by the Berlin publishing house Gestalten. Last year, the Munich publishing house Prestel released another of his books, Modern Architecture and Interiors.
