The heart of the city, its ailments and treatment. Regarding questions concerning city centers not only using the example of Ostrava – this is the title of a lecture by art historian Martin Strakoš, which will be presented on Wednesday, April 29th at 18:00 in the Ostrava Antiquarian and Club Fiducia.
The depopulation of city centers, their growth or contraction, the exploitation of prominent historical sites by the tourist industry, the increase in traffic load, and the decline of traditional housing, shops, and services represent problems of a general nature in the majority of contemporary urban settlements.
The lecture will focus on mapping the interventions proposed by architects, urban planners, and other public representatives for the benefit of preserving the important role of city centers from the beginning of the 20th century to the present. Using examples from both the local and European context, the author will document various strategies for the development and transformation of urban cores on the scale of small towns and metropolises.

As part of the cycle What Next, Ostrava?, which is held under the patronage of the Mayor of Ostrava, Tomáš Macura.

Events of the Antiquarian and Club Fiducia are supported by: the Ministry of Culture of the Czech Republic, the Statutory City of Ostrava, the OKD Foundation, the Municipal District of Moravská Ostrava and Přívoz, the Foundation of Czech Architecture, the Czech Chamber of Architects, MUDr. David Feltl, the law firm Jansa, Mokrý, Otevřel and partners.
