The third part of the lecture series focused on the "human dimension" of architecture will take place on Thursday, May 2, 2019, at the cultural center Papírna Plzeň. One of the duo of architects, Kateřina Vídenová – Adam Wlazel, will present their project Mobile Architectural Office (MAK!). Within this framework, architects also design conventional architecture; however, the focus of their work is on activities in public spaces.
Through these interventions, which engage experts from various fields and members of local communities, they aim to improve specific spaces. In addition to designing these transformations, Kateřina and Adam often implement them themselves. During these events, which usually have an educational character, they also organize accompanying cultural programs – lectures, discussions, exhibitions, screenings, dinners, and workshops for children.
Other activities of the founders of the Mobile Architectural Office (MAK!) also touch on the current possibilities of urban life. The public in Plzeň may know the work of Kateřina and Adam primarily from the City Swimming Pool on the Radbuza River. Here, the architects – in close collaboration with the team Pěstuj prostor – significantly contributed in 2014 to the revitalization of a long-neglected site. During a two-week intensive workshop, they helped conceptually grasp the historic space of the swimming pool and design dozens of pieces of new "site-specific" furniture. Together with volunteers from nine countries around the world (including several locals from Plzeň and members of Plzeň associations and other organizations), they produced the furniture on-site. In line with the intentions of the MAK! study, the first phase of renovations of the buildings in the area of the former transport depot into the creative zone DEPO2015 was also carried out.
Admission to the event is 50 CZK. The final installment of the series "The Human Dimension of Architecture" will take place on Wednesday, May 15, 2019, at 6 PM in the former apartment of the Kraus couple (one of Loos's interiors). Architect and curator Karolína Plášková will present the project Dear Architects..., which focuses on the ethical dimension and social and political implications of architecture.
The series is organized by the association Pěstuj prostor with the support of the city of Plzeň, the Czech Ministry of Culture, and the Czech Architecture Foundation. Its aim is to support and develop the interest of local professionals and the wider public in architecture and the built and landscape environments of the city.
