Discussion on the relationship between the public space of the city of Karlovy Vary and the film festival. The discussion will feature Petr Kropp (Office of Architecture of the City of Karlovy Vary) and Pavla Melková (MCA atelier, document developer). Following the discussion, the film "Human Scale" will be screened with an introductory thematic commentary.
The Office of Architecture of the City of Karlovy Vary and MCA atelier invite the residents of Karlovy Vary, as well as visitors of the International Film Festival, to a discussion about the relationship between public space and the Karlovy Vary Film Festival, which will take place on Monday, July 1, at 6 PM at Dr. M. Horáková Square with the participation of notable guests. After the discussion, this space will transform into a smaller summer cinema, where we will watch the film "Human Scale" together. The city of Karlovy Vary has been linked to the International Film Festival, the largest film festival in the Czech Republic, for 73 years. Every year, the city comes alive at the beginning of summer and overflows with visitors who come to see new films and experience the atmosphere of this world-famous event. The city of Karlovy Vary has decided, in cooperation with the Office of Architecture and the MCA atelier, to start addressing the quality of its public spaces. What are the connections between the international film event and the everyday life of the city? “As architects, we are interested in how a film festival, as an annual significant cultural event, can contribute to the lasting quality of the public spaces of Karlovy Vary, and conversely – what the quality of public spaces brings to the visitors of the event,” explains architect Pavla Melková from MCA. The public discussion will seek intersections of possible cooperation between the festival organizers, local government, and architects. “The discussion about the public space of Karlovy Vary will take place within the preparation of a Strategy for a conceptual approach to public spaces, which is being prepared in collaboration with us by the MCA atelier. We invite all users of the city to come talk with us about the quality and vision of public spaces,” stated Petr Kropp, director of KAM. “After the discussion and a short break, we will screen the film 'Human Scale' for the public, which is a beautiful example of how to create a city friendly to the lives of its inhabitants, liberate it from the dominance of cars, and thus create space for pedestrians and cyclists. The film will be introduced with thematic commentary,” informs Jana Boukalová from KAM, who also added that admission to this event is free.
