Lectures

The lecture cycle organized by the civic association Kruh in 2010 will present the work and achievements of Czech architects operating abroad. The series of lecture evenings will start with presentations by young architects who are navigating a "borderless" world, gaining invaluable experience in prominent foreign architectural studios (Zaha Hadid, OMA, Norman Foster, Renzo Piano, etc.). In subsequent dates, architects from an older generation will present, who left Czechia before 1989, often for political reasons, and have established significant positions in architectural practice as well as being university professors abroad. The specifics of the creative and life experiences of architects from this generation will be showcased by Mirko Baum (*1944), who works at the Technical University of Aachen, for which he designed the award-winning Faculty of Architecture building. He is also known to the Czech public as the author of the brilliant essay book on technicist architecture "Ulice na konci světa / Strasse am Ende der Welt" (2007). In May, architect Ivan Reimann (*1957), active in Berlin and at the Technical University of Dresden, will speak, the author of the Berlin building of the Federal Foreign Office. The spring cycle will conclude with a lecture by architect Jasan Burin (*1929), who emigrated to Great Britain in 1965 and subsequently worked mainly in the USA.

The civic association Kruh has been organizing public events and lectures focused on contemporary architecture since 2001. The aim of the lectures and discussions is to facilitate a dialogue about quality Czech and world architecture and architectural creation to broader segments of the public - i.e., beyond the narrow circle of experts and architecture students. To date, Kruh has held over one hundred lectures by prominent and emerging Czech and foreign architects and architectural theorists.
