In December, as part of the series "Conversations About Art", Hans Ulrich Obrist will discuss with Noemi Smolik. "I really believe that artists are among the most important people on the planet. And if what I do benefits them and helps them, then I am happy," says Obrist, whose list of publications and exhibitions is nearly endless. It is hard to say where he lives. You can meet him in London, where he co-directs the Serpentine Gallery, but also in Tokyo or Rio. He mostly sleeps on airplanes.
Hans Ulrich Obrist - Obrist organized his first exhibition at the age of 23 in the kitchen of his apartment in St. Gallen. The exhibition "Hotel Carlton Palace Chambre 763", during which he managed to fit more than 70 artists into a space of 12 m², became legendary. It was Obrist who initiated a trend of art exhibitions held in unconventional places, a trend that continues to this day. And it was Obrist's Interviews that broke records. His famous "Marathons," 24-hour conversations, and especially his book of interviews "A Brief History of Curating" are well known. It is therefore no surprise that the renowned magazine Art Review named him the most influential figure in the contemporary art scene in 2009. Noemi Smolik is a critic publishing in Kunstforum, Artforum, in the publications Kunstzeitung, Parkett, Frankfurter Allgemeine Zeitung, and Mladá fronta dnes, and she also serves as a professor of art history. Since June 2011, she has been the artistic guarantor at the Central Bohemian Gallery GASK in Kutná Hora.
