Lecture with discussion Baroque refectory of the Dominican Monastery of St. Giles in Prague Wednesday, February 5, 2014, at 7:30 PM
After the Tuesday Mass on February 4, 2014, there will be a debate in the sacristy of the academic Church of the Most Holy Savior presenting the book Enthusiasm and Doubt I / New Art in an Old Church in the presence of its author, Father Friedhelm Mennekes SJ, Tomáš Halík, and Norbert Schmidt. The book by the well-known Jesuit largely discusses the interventions of contemporary art that Father Mennekes organized in his late Gothic church of St. Peter in Cologne. The discussants will touch on fundamental questions regarding the relationship of faith, theology, contemporary art, and culture: What does a person need contemporary art for? How can art enrich the life of faith and the liturgical space itself? What is the nature of the divide between so-called old and new art?
On Wednesday, February 5, Father Mennekes will give a lecture in the baroque refectory of the Dominicans, focusing more deeply on the issues of space itself: What new spaces are opened up by art, music, and light? And what are the prerequisites for a person to enter them?
Translation of both meetings will be provided.
