From the Ore Mountains to Karviná, from Náchod to Vimperk, from Prague through Brno and Ostrava to Bratislava - between September 28 and October 4, Architecture Day will head to nearly ninety cities across the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Throughout the week, it will present a new perspective on the architecture that surrounds us - from modern buildings awarded by professionals to historical gems and often overlooked but equally intriguing structures.
The main theme of this year's program is "Architecture Together". The festival commemorates this year's anniversary of the republic and aims to capture the development of Czechoslovak architecture over the past 100 years in its entirety. Visitors will be able to closely explore the Municipal House, where the independence of Czechoslovakia was declared on October 28, 1918, stroll through the early republican Olomouc, or visit the Legiodům in Jihlava built in the National style. They will appreciate the interwar architecture of Liberec, get to know the City Theatre in Most, which straddles the border between brutalism and structuralism and is among the most unique cultural buildings of the second half of the 20th century in our country, walk along the Vřídelní colonnade in Karlovy Vary from 1975, and learn more about the unique residential estate Lesná in Brno. The journey from the past to the present will then conclude, for example, at the unique archaeological museum Archeopark Pavlov, which holds the Architecture Award 2017, in the modern multifunctional sports hall in Dolní Břežany, or in the Czech EXPO pavilion in Vizovice, which will transport us to the world of modular architecture.
The detailed program of the international festival Architecture Day 2018 in individual cities in the Czech Republic and Slovakia, including open buildings within the Hurá dovnitř! (Hooray Inside!) initiative, is available at www.denarchitektury.cz.
An integral part of Architecture Day is the international film festival FILM AND ARCHITECTURE, which has newly expanded to twenty cities. The main axis of the program will consist of feature films focused on architecture, city creation, and design. The festival will also open with a ceremonial warm-up just like last year. On September 20 at the Světozor cinema, it will showcase the fascinating biographical film Eames: The Architect and The Painter. The festival will conclude in Prague on October 4 once again at Světozor with a lecture by the prominent German architect, Professor Hans Kollhoff, who shaped the face of reunited Berlin.
PRAGUE The capital city has prepared a truly diverse program, including over seventy events. There will be a walk in Prague dedicated to Cubism and its derivatives, guiding us through the best and most significant occurrences in the architecture of this style. The Hotel International will open its doors, being one of the best examples of the so-called sorely in Czech architecture. Vinohrady will offer a tour of the Sokol building, an example of one of the purest Prague functionalist buildings from the transitional period of the 1930s and 1940s, the Agricultural Enlightenment House by Josef Gočár, Laichter House by Jan Kotěra, and the former Šretrova restaurant in Riegrovy Sady with its viewing terraces.
Prague will also see several unconventional events. One of them is a run for architecture, where experienced female architects and runners will lead participants to the early republican functionalist villa colony Baba or to the well-known garden and villa districts of Hanspaulka and Ořechovka. Another event is a boat trip along the Vltava River, focusing on Prague rowers this year.
CENTRAL BOHEMIA The diverse program of Architecture Day will take place in 15 cities across the Central Bohemia region. In Beroun, we will explore the buildings of the First Republic with the Beroun Sobě association. In Benešov, First Republic buildings will also be highlighted, including a tour of Karlova and Klášterka. As part of the Hurá dovnitř! project, buildings with engaging explanations from architects and historians will be opened to the public. In Benešov, this will include the Art Nouveau museum by Marcel Dusil. In Dolní Břežany, we will explore the sports hall, and in Libčice nad Vltavou, we will visit the Boiler House and Coal Mill directly with the project's author. In Strančice, we will take a look at an experimental administrative-operations building constructed as a concrete cast.
SOUTH MORAVIA The South Moravian region is also preparing a rich program for Architecture Day. In Brno, people can look forward to tours of the three biggest villas (the oldest, the youngest, and the largest) by one of the most significant Brno interwar architects, Ernst Wiesner. In Hodonín, art historian will guide participants through the early republican architecture. In Znojmo, the oldest factory in Central Europe will open to the public, where visitors can view unique interiors and the production processes of a ceramics factory from 1878. The Archeopark Museum in Pavlov, which lies four meters below the surface in an archaeological site from the Upper Paleolithic, has prepared an engaging tour with the building's authors.
MORAVIAN-SILESIAN REGION It may seem that the architecture of socialist realism, so characteristic of Poruba, is just a single historical layer contained in this part of Ostrava. An interesting walk titled From Village to City will uncover additional layers. The tour of the gas holder, now known as the multifunctional hall Gong designed by architect Josef Pleskot, will present the center of education and culture in an unconventional way. In Ostrava, there will also be paths following architectural competitions.
How has the local landscape changed due to the extraction of coal? This will be revealed to visitors of Architecture Day in Karviná. An interesting audiovisual program will be showcased in Frýdek-Místek, where the former Moravia Bank building designed by Bohumil Hübschmann from 1928 will come to life under the guidance of the city architect. A walk with a landscape architect will recall the unique and extensive landscaping work of Šebelův park in Kunčice under Ondřejník. Nový Jičín will offer a unique opportunity to view all the neo-Renaissance Hückel villas simultaneously with a guide before their renovation. NORTHERN BOHEMIA Right in Liberec, we will focus on interwar architecture. We will learn how to understand the city in a moderated debate with a walk in Česká Lípa. The city park will come alive with a fall land art workshop offering workshops, walks, and accompanying programs. As part of Architecture Day, historic sites usually not accessible will open in Lomnice nad Popelkou, such as the savings bank, Tyl's theatre, city cinema, bell tower, mortuary, and chapel at the cemetery.
With architects, we will follow the paths of interwar apartment building construction in Ústí nad Labem. The same theme will be carried over into a planned exhibition of photographs. There will also be a lecture about the Ústí architect Franz Joseph Arnold, creator not only of interwar municipal apartment buildings. Děčín is preparing over 20 events. We will discover the history and present of the Tyrš bridge - the oldest bridge in Děčín crossing the Elbe. We will explore the transformations of Děčín's infrastructure throughout history and compare it with examples from abroad with architecture students.
In Most, there will be an unconventional tour of the City Theatre with an art historian and a discussion with architects on the topic of the Reborn City. How did architecture reflect the spirit of the times 100 years ago and now? You will find out on a walk 100 years into the past with architects in Lounech. They will embark on a walk through significant buildings in Žatec on a pedestrian bus through the last century.
SOUTH BOHEMIA České Budějovice plans a walk through the art pieces in public spaces with the editor-in-chief of the magazine ERA21. Those interested in contemporary architecture on the edge of Český Krumlov will venture out with an architecture student, who will remind them that the architecture of the city is not just defined by its center. During the First Republic, a number of interesting buildings were constructed in Tábor, which architects will guide you through. The city will also offer discussions with historians on the topic of The Showcase of the Young Republic's Achievements. The castle grounds of Vimperk will be guided by the castle curator, focusing on adaptations and reconstructions of the site during the 20th century. In Volyně and its surroundings, they will trace the paths of architect Josef Zítko, the creator of the National Theatre. In Veselí nad Lužnicí, the renaissance town hall will be revived during Architecture Day with a music festival and the opening of a modern architecture gallery.
