Kristek, Kuzemenský, Ponešová and Šépka Teaching Architecture Ethically? on Wednesday, February 20, 2019, at 19:00 Gallery UM, UMPRUM Jan Palach Square 80, Prague 1 free entry
Even in school, we cannot avoid the moral dilemmas that accompany the architect's practice. In schools, even more than in the regular world, we can consciously bend projects and assignments so that they reflect our worldview. But how does contemporary education relate to the contemporary world? Is it even possible to try setting ethical questions in the idealized conditions of a school? What is the role of architecture schools in redefining the boundaries of the discipline itself in the context of paradigm shifts? The role of the educator seems to be key. They set the assignments and pose questions. They teach the craft and critical thinking. Should assignments be ethical and moral by their very nature, or is that even possible? Can and should it be taught at all? To what extent are these conscious decisions of the teaching method? How is social, societal, or ecological responsibility reflected in the assignments? The discussion on teaching will feature representatives from three schools - Jan Kristek, the new dean of the Faculty of Architecture at VUT Brno, Barbora Ponešová also from VUT Brno, Michal Kuzemenský from FA ČVUT, and Jan Šépka, the current head of the A1 studio at UMPRUM. The discussion will be moderated by former A1 student Viktória Mravčáková. The discussion is part of the accompanying program for the A1.zip exhibition. Free entry.
