Nová Paka - The Hradec Králové Region today began the construction of a school sports hall in Nová Paka in Jičín district at the building of the high school. The construction, costing 105 million crowns including value-added tax, is expected to be completed in January 2025, the regional council stated. The region has three secondary schools in the nine-thousand-strong Nová Paka, none of which have adequate sports facilities. The hall will also be used by the public and local sports clubs. It is expected to help with the development of sports in the city and its surrounding area.
"We will equip the hall with modern elements for a wide range of sports, such as a climbing wall, a gym, and facilities in the form of storage rooms, changing rooms with washrooms and toilets, and an elevator," said the Deputy Governor for Education and Sports Arnošt Štěpánek (Pirates).
The hall with a playing field measuring 40 by 20 meters will connect to the high school building. The roof of the hall will be covered with greenery, and excess rainwater from the roof will be collected in a retention tank. There will be a gallery for spectators in the hall. The construction work will also include the repair of the sewage system in the school area.
The region has been preparing the hall's construction for several years; the project emerged from an architectural competition announced by the region in 2019. The winner was the studio Studený architekti from Slovakia.
In addition to students from the Gymnasium and the Secondary School of Pedagogy, students from the Secondary School of Gastronomy and Services and the Secondary School of Engineering and Electrical Engineering will also train in the hall.
The gym will be built for the region by the Hradec Králové construction firm Valc. The investment is being funded by the region from its budget. The amount resulting from the competition does not include the gym equipment. The region has allocated 125 million crowns for the entire project.
