Prague - The alternative cultural and residential space Trafačka in Prague's Vysočany is ending its activity after eight years of existence in the former ČKD transformer station. This evening, on the eighth anniversary of Trafačka's founding, it will open its final exhibition, showcasing the works of several dozen former and current residents and friends of Trafačka.

Following the termination of the lease with the Prague Property Management, the Trafačka premises will revert to the owner in February 2015, who plans to partially demolish it and convert part of it into a residential building. Current residents are unsuccessfully searching for new spaces for their creative and exhibition activities. At today's vernissage, Floex, Udo Kraft, Ježíš táhne na Berlín, DJ Bidlo, Ondřej Formánek, and others will perform. The exhibition throughout all areas of Trafačka will run until December 14, open daily from 3 PM to 7 PM.
Since 2006, the former transformer station in Vysočany has functioned as a residence for artists, a gallery, and a concert venue. It primarily focuses on all possible forms of street art. The originally two-year lease of the land where Trafačka stands was extended due to the 2009 crisis - plans for demolition and construction of an office building were slowed down by the financial crisis. The owner has now begun to plan the construction again, but it is expected to be a building with apartments and shops.
More than 150 exhibitions, concerts, workshops, festivals, showcases, screenings, and theatrical performances have taken place in the Trafačka premises. In the spirit of DIY (Do It Yourself), the communal environment has grown into several separate units - a gallery, large halls, and a private courtyard overlooking 31 rented studios in the adjacent tenement house.
Founding members Jan Kaláb, Michal Cimala, and Jakub Nepraš had their studios in various spaces of Trafačka from its inception until the end. The studios have hosted artists such as Jakub Matuška, Václav Girsa, Robert Šalanda, Daniel Vlček, Roman Týc, Martin Káňa, Stanley Povoda, Aleš Brázdil, Jakub Hubálek, Terezie Honsová, Matěj Hájek, and many others.
Trafačka was nicknamed the Temple of Freedom, after the subtitle of a documentary film made three years ago by Saša Dlouhý and Roman Vávra, which focused on the space and the events happening in and around it.
