Prague - In Prague, due to a lack of interest from viewers, the second large multiplex has closed. With the last day of March, Cinema City Park Hostivař has closed its doors. The multiplex at the Novodvorská Plaza shopping center was the first to cease operations in 2008.
The Cinema City Hostivař multiplex was the first modern multiplex in Prague. It opened to viewers in 2000. It had eight air-conditioned halls with giant screens for a total of 1,730 viewers.
Over the past 12 years, the cinema changed its name and ownership three times. It first operated for two years under the name Ster Century and until last year as Palace Cinemas. All operators struggled with low attendance and unprofitable operations.
According to the website digitalnikino.cz, only one of the eight cinema halls in Hostivař was digitized. It is therefore likely that the cinema operators, who faced the necessity of technical innovation, preferred to cease operations instead.
Cinema City did not publicly announce the closure of the cinema, added tn.cz. The cinema's program for the following weeks simply disappeared from its website.
Cinema attendance fell by a fifth last year compared to the previous year and was the lowest in the last six years. Last year, 10.79 million people visited the cinemas. Revenues for cinemas also declined. Last year, multiplexes earned about one billion crowns, which was 291 million crowns less than the previous year. The attendance of multiplexes dropped to 7.2 million viewers.
