Olomouc - A new amphitheater is set to open next year in the grounds of the Korunní Fortress on the edge of the historic center of Olomouc, which will expand the range of cultural events in the city. The managers of the Korunní Fortress plan to invest approximately seven million crowns in the construction, with 60 percent of the costs covered by a European Union grant. This was announced today by Markéta Záleská, director of the civic association Museum of the Olomouc Fortress.

"We want to promote the area of the Korunní Fortress. We decided to build an amphitheater because, in addition to large events, we plan to have more intimate programs and minority genres," said Záleská. In addition to concerts, theatrical performances and movie screenings are also being considered. The amphitheater, which will have a capacity of 800 seats, could be rented by organizers of cultural events or Palacký University.
The Museum of the Olomouc Fortress association has already signed a contract with the Regional Operational Program of Central Moravia, through which EU funds flow into the region. "We went for it even under tough conditions of a 40 percent co-financing, which we have to cover from our own sources," noted Záleská.
Olomouc is lacking a modern amphitheater. The original summer cinema near St. Wenceslas Cathedral is dilapidated, and cultural events are now held there only sporadically. Moreover, the city council has abandoned plans to invest approximately 100 million crowns in the reconstruction of the summer cinema and its surroundings.
The Korunní Fortress is a preserved military structure that was part of the original bastion fortifications of Olomouc. The bastion fortress was completed in 1785. It was decommissioned in 1886, and the area continued to serve the army as storage. Until 1995, the object was classified, and the public did not know what was inside. The area fell into disrepair and was also damaged by floods in 1997. At the end of the 20th century, the city of Olomouc became the owner of the fortress, and since 2008, the civic association Museum of the Olomouc Fortress has been gradually renovating the area.
A science museum called Fortress of Knowledge is being created in the former artillery storage of the fortress, which will offer a planetarium, a flood model of the city, and a model of the human brain. The museum's exhibition will be adorned, for example, with spatial tic-tac-toe, two-meter steel scales, giant wooden puzzles, and a cannon model. In addition to interactive exhibitions, the center will include laboratories, studios, and workshops.
The total cost of constructing the museum is 150 million crowns. The project is co-financed by the European Regional Development Fund. Work on it began in 2009, and it was officially launched in December 2011. The establishment of the Fortress of Knowledge will create a visitor center in Olomouc, aimed at engaging children and young people in natural and social sciences in a playful and entertaining way.
