Ostrava - The second phase of extensive window replacement in the largest town hall building in the country continues at the magistrate's building on Prokeš Square in Ostrava. Last year, 317 windows in the left wing of the building were replaced, and today the winner of the public tender commenced the second phase of the replacement. In the following weeks, from Friday to Tuesday, windows in the right wing will be changed. By October at the latest, the town hall will have an additional 231 new windows, said the magistrate's spokesperson Andrea Vojkovská to ČTK.
The town hall is a cultural monument and is located in the Moravian Ostrava heritage zone. The new windows are therefore replicas of the original ones, made of oak and maintaining the same dimensions and divisions; the method and direction of opening the wings have also been preserved.
The replacement is divided into four parts, and the total costs for the window renewal will exceed 78 million crowns excluding VAT. In the third phase, windows in the central part of the building will be replaced, including the large windows in the room where city council meetings are held. The stained glass windows by the grand staircase will also be refurbished. The last windows to be replaced will be those in the extension on Sokolská Street. In this case, it is no longer a cultural monument, but part of a building located in the heritage zone.
The entire replacement is expected to be completed by October 2020. In total, craftsmen will replace 1183 windows, with the most, 514, occurring in the third phase planned from May to October 2019. The windows in the town hall building are 86 years old.
