Broumov (Náchod region) - In Broumov in the Náchod region, the reconstruction of part of the Benedictine monastery and garden was completed today. The repairs cost approximately 250 million crowns, and the renovated spaces will serve as a cultural and educational center. The reconstructed part of the monastery will be accessible for free to visitors on the weekend of April 25th and 26th. Jan Školník from the Agency for the Development of Broumov Area told ČTK that the agency will operate the center.

About one-fifth of the monastery building was renovated, where new spaces have been created that will primarily be used for educational and cultural activities. The reconstruction was funded by European grants. "The current reconstruction is the culmination of activities that began in 2004 when we were allowed to enter the spaces of the monastery with the first public event. This was followed by the expansion of the program and care for the monument, which showed that the monastery can fulfill the role of a cultural and social center,” said Školník.
The reconstruction involved, for example, the installation of new water, electricity, waste, and heating systems. A new recording studio, concert halls, and classrooms were created in the monastery building. The builders also renovated the monastery garden, where a multifunctional hall was created from the restoration of a former wood storage facility.
The Broumov monastery remained accessible to visitors even during the repairs, and the construction work did not significantly affect the tour route, which passes through the monastery library, refectory, and St. Adalbert Church. However, the monastery garden was closed due to the renovations.
An attraction for tourists is the replica of the so-called Shroud of Turin, in which Christ was wrapped when he was taken down from the cross. The copy, dating from 1651, was found in the monastery church in 1999. The monastery also houses the so-called mummies from Vamberk.
