Brno - A collection of military warehouses from the Austro-Hungarian era between Veveří and Kounicova streets in Brno is slowly disappearing under demolition machines. The demolition work is expected to last only a few weeks, with construction possibly starting in three years, Pavel Knapec, the managing director of Veveří Centre, said today to ČTK. The company has already obtained a zoning decision after many discussions with the city and is now preparing a project for a building permit. The space where the warehouses are located is supposed to be occupied by a multifunctional building for housing and services according to the design by architect Eva Jiřičná and AI-DESIGN.

"Even though we will not start building yet, we wanted to remove the warehouses. Homeless people began to congregate there and it wasn't very safe. Once the work is finished, we will secure the area against entry, leaving a wall from the street," Knapec stated.

Although the project was created ten years ago, not much has changed since then. "We wanted to leave it that way," Knapec noted. The construction itself is expected to take 2.5 to three years, and people should move in gradually as different parts are completed.

The plot is approximately 140 by 120 meters. The building will be diagonally divided from the plane tree at the corner of Pekárenská and Veveří towards Závodní street. A covered passage will divide the building into two blocks. There are to be two levels of underground garages with 800 spaces, and above ground, there are plans for six to seven floors. The first floor is to feature commercial spaces totaling 10,000 square meters, including a supermarket; currently, there is an Albert store in the area.

Around 300 apartments are planned, and in the middle, there is a plan for a grassed inner courtyard for residents on the roof of the commercial areas.

The project even accounts for the future placement of a stop for the underground tram, but its construction in Brno is uncertain.
