Zruč nad Sázavou (Kutnohorsko) - A new lookout tower, Babka, was opened today near Zruč nad Sázavou in the Kutnohorsko region, which is expected to attract more tourists to the town. The construction cost 3.7 million crowns, with 85 percent funded by the European Union, said mayor Martin Hujer. The wooden lookout tower, named through a poll among locals, stands in the Mezi cestami area, about two kilometers north of the town at an altitude of 451 meters. The observation platform is located 24 meters above the surrounding terrain. "The lookout tower is connected to a hiking trail, designed so that tourists pass by all the significant points," said the mayor. The hiking trail begins at the train station. People arriving by car can park at the new cemetery, about a kilometer from the lookout tower. After climbing 130 steps, visitors will have a view of the entire town and its surroundings - to the southeast is the Melechov hill near Ledeč nad Sázavou, to the southwest the Velký Blaník hill near Vlašim, to the east tourists will see the Fiolník hill near Vlastějovice, and to the west, the Jordán hill and the village of Chabeřice. The lookout tower will be accessible year-round, and entry to it is free. In Central Bohemia, lookout towers such as the Bohdanka tower in Bohdaň, Kutnohorsko, were built in the past. Another similar structure was opened at the Kaňk hill near Kutná Hora or at Březák near Lbosín in the Benešov region. Recently, the former Drtina lookout tower was restored at the Besedná hill near Chotilsko in the Příbram region, and the Máminka lookout tower was built on Krušná mountain near Hudlice in the Beroun region. The Čížovka lookout tower near Kněžmost in the Mladá Boleslav region is also set to open soon.
