Brno – A new urban district could be developed in the area of the Masaryk Circuit in Brno, where the motorcycle Grand Prix of the Czech Republic is held, according to today’s Hospodářské noviny (HN). The owner of the circuit and the majority of the surrounding land, Karel Abraham, has already requested a change to the zoning plan. A spokesperson for the Automotodrom Brno company, led by Abraham, told the newspaper that the firm is addressing the long-term outlook for the use of the racing circuit, including alternatives.

According to HN, Abraham plans to build a complete new urban part near the circuit. It would include residential buildings for 18,000 people, as well as a school, shops, offices, and a health center.

The land in the Brno automotodrome area falls about two-thirds within the cadastral area of the Brno district of Žebětín and one-third in the neighboring municipality of Ostrovačice. Currently, it is classified as a sports area, but entrepreneur Abraham wants to change it to "a mixed zone for living and business" through a change in the zoning plan.

"Mr. Abraham has already come to Žebětín and Ostrovačice to say that he would like to build a new Žebětín," said HN the Deputy Mayor of Brno, Petr Hladík (KDU-ČSL). The mayor of Ostrovačice, Tomáš Hájek (Together for Ostrovačice), also confirmed discussions with Abraham about the change in the zoning plan.

The Automotodrom Brno company commented only generally on its plans for the racing circuit. Spokesperson Petr Boháč told HN that the company is addressing the long-term outlook on how to utilize the circuit area, including alternatives. According to him, the development of the situation in the automotive industry or the increasingly strict regulations concerning the environment could mean excessive restrictions on motorsport.

According to Boháč, the Automotodrom is fully focused this season and in the coming years on the operation of the racetrack and other activities it offers to the public. "The racetrack fully serves its original purpose, and Automotodrom Brno will continue to utilize it in this way," added the spokesperson.
